Kitah Dalet students have been studying the Gold Rush era in Social Sciences. During STEAM, students had the opportunity to build models of:
- The Port of San Francisco (in 1849)
- A Mining Camp
- Sutter’s Mill
- A Saloon
Each group described their model in a short essay explaining the use of materials, historical accuracy, and details about their scene. During STEAM class and in working groups, students researched before building their models to make an accurate representation of what they were going to develop. Students also put their engineering skills into practice using 3D modeling and building to scale (proportions).
This was a beautiful example of integration between Social Science and STEAM. Earlier in the year, students did a Renewal Energy project, also integrated with their Social Studies lessons.
This year, 4th grade STEAM has covered various topics, all integrating with their California studies, from landforms to coding to electricity, magnetism, and electromagnetism, to how to research online, to model building, and beyond.
