Third grade’s guiding question is, “what is my role in the community.”
We’ve learned that it is our job to make our community better, whether that be at home, school, or out in the larger world. So we decided to do was have a good ol’ fashioned bake sale.
How will this better our community, you ask?
Each student picked a cause they felt strongly about and they researched why this cause needs our support. They then found a nonprofit that supports and helps this cause. Students wrote 5 paragraph essays explaining why we should donate the profits from our bake sale to this non-profit. They raised over $250 this year in gross profits! In the end, the votes were tallied, and we decided to split the money between the two non-profits that got the most votes- Homeless Garden Project and the Ella Baker Center for Human Rights.
Through this project, students studied Jewish texts to support their opinion, learned about the economy and how producers and consumers are integral to California, and put their math skills to the test.
